Villager trading for Mending - 2026 method
The reliable, repeatable way to land Mending without waiting for a treasure-book to spawn in a chest.
Why Mending matters
Mending repairs durability using XP you absorb naturally. Combined with a passive XP farm (fishing, blaze spawner, iron golem hall) it makes every other enchantment on the gear effectively permanent - you never need to chain anvil repairs again. Avoiding repeat anvil uses keeps your prior-work penalty near zero, which means the calculator's plans stay well under the 40-level cap.
Step-by-step villager trap
- Find or breed an unemployed adult villager near your base.
- Place a lectern within their pathing range; they'll claim it and become a librarian.
- Open the trades panel. If you don't see Mending, break the lectern (the librarian will become unemployed) and place a fresh lectern - they reroll trades. Repeat up to ~50 times until one offers Mending.
- The instant you see Mending, trade with the villager once. Even buying paper or a stick at the first tier locks the entire trade list - including the Mending offer - permanently.
- Reduce the Mending price by curing a zombie villager (using a weakness potion + golden apple) before locking the trade. This drops the price from up to 64 emeralds to ~5.
Bedrock difference
Bedrock librarians refresh trades when you break and replace the lectern only if the villager has not yet traded with anyone. Identical method works, but the timing window is tighter.
Pairing with the calculator
Once you have a Mending book, drop it into the calculator alongside your other books and pick "Least prior-work" mode. The result will be the cheapest plan that lands a Mending pickaxe / sword / armor piece that you can then keep alive forever through passive XP.
